In 2005 Korbawib, a village of refugees on the Eritrean-Sudanese border had no local water source. A team from IHS constructed a small dam to provide a small reservoir of water from rains that come only one time each year. The dam is about 6 meters long and 1.5 meters high. This project was a small experiment performed very quickly and using generally very inexpensive materials. However, rain storms filled the reservoir and the dam held the water.
Prior to this the people walked more than three kilometers to the Gerger River where water was drawn by hand from wells nearby. The roof of Kisanet Elementary was sagging so badly it could fall at any time. Rain water found its way through the sagging tile, soaked the ceiling tile and deposited most of it on the floors of the classrooms. The two small boxes of educational toys have long since seen their best days.
In September of 2006 a team from IHS purchased tools and materials. They hired four local construction workers. In just one week one of three buildings was completed. The cost was a little more than $5,000.
In September 2008 another gift of $5,000 was delivered and the second project began in coordination with the Mayor of Kere.
